Three new UNESCO Chairs established in Türkiye

UNESCO’s Turkish National Commission announced three new Chairs on 30 October 2026, bringing Türkiye’s total number of UNITWIN Networks and UNESCO Chairs to 23. Eskişehir Technical University hosts the UNESCO Chair on Nature-Based Intelligence for Urban Resilience and Sustainable Cities. The other new Chairs, at Biruni University and Ondokuz Mayıs University, focus respectively on AI-supported simulation in health education and on biodiversity, wetland conservation and climate resilience.

Assessing Fire Severity Patterns and Carbon Sink Capacity Changes Following the 2021 Manavgat Wildfire Using Remote Sensing and Google Earth Engine

According to his announcement of 23 October 2026, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Halil Duymuş’s single-author paper was accepted for publication in Environmental Monitoring and Assessment on 22 October 2026. The paper is awaiting publication. The author reports the journal classification as WoS Q3.

The study examines fire severity patterns and changes in carbon sink capacity following the 2021 Manavgat wildfire using remote sensing and Google Earth Engine.

The author identifies EPD-Net as the related project. Supported by Erasmus+, EPD-Net develops an ecological planning and design learning network and an AI-supported adaptive training module for disaster-resilient and sustainable cities. This announcement is shared with the WP5 outreach team.

EPD-Net training module presented at municipal resilience seminar in Kuldīga

On 20 October 2026, Lilita Sproģe from the Latvian Association of Landscape Architects, a partner in the EPD-Net project, presented the project’s training module at a seminar in Kuldīga, Latvia.

Titled “Municipal Resilience and Continuity of Services During Crises: Lessons from the August Storm and Ukraine”, the seminar was organised by Latvijas Pašvaldību savienība (the Latvian Association of Local and Regional Governments). Municipal leaders, civil protection experts, representatives of public institutions and services, and Ukrainian municipal representatives discussed practical ways to maintain municipal services during emergencies.

The seminar also included a visit to the newly opened disaster management centre in Kuldīga. Lilita’s presentation shared EPD-Net’s training work with practitioners working on municipal resilience and crisis preparedness, contributing to the project’s WP5 outreach activities.

EPD-Net Team Member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Maria Gabriella Trovato Honoured with the 2026 IFLA President’s Award

The EPD-Net consortium is pleased to celebrate the recognition of its team member, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Maria Gabriella Trovato, with the 2026 President’s Award of the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA).

This prestigious distinction recognises her contributions to humanitarian landscape architecture, ecological restoration, and socially inclusive approaches to landscape recovery, particularly in communities affected by conflict, displacement, and environmental challenges.

Through her academic and professional engagement, including her work with Landscape Architects Without Borders (LAWB), Maria Gabriella Trovato has contributed to advancing the understanding of landscapes as essential components of community well-being, cultural identity, environmental recovery, and long-term resilience.

Her work closely resonates with the mission of EPD-Net, which seeks to strengthen international cooperation, education, and professional capacity in ecological planning and design, disaster risk reduction, and resilient recovery.

The EPD-Net consortium warmly congratulates Maria on this distinguished international recognition. We are delighted to have her expertise and commitment within our international partnership and look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts towards more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable environments.

A new chapter is beginning for EPD-Net!

Dear EPD-Net Partners and Colleagues,

We are proud and delighted to share an important milestone with our EPD-Net community. Our UNESCO Chair application, developed in connection with EPD-Net and submitted by Eskişehir Technical University under the UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs Programme, has been positively evaluated by UNESCO specialists and is now pending final validation.

UNESCO has officially informed us that the draft agreement for establishing the Chair will be shared shortly. The Chair will be formally established once the agreement has been finalized and signed by all parties.

This achievement represents a significant step towards strengthening the long-term scientific, educational, and institutional impact of EPD-Net. It also opens new opportunities for international collaboration, knowledge exchange, capacity building, and the advancement of disaster resilience and sustainable development beyond the project's lifetime.

We look forward to building this new chapter together with our EPD-Net partners, transforming our shared vision and collective efforts into a lasting international academic legacy.

Together, we are building not only a project, but a lasting international network for a more resilient and sustainable future.

On 16 October 2026, Prof. Dr. Alper Çabuk participated as a panellist in the IFLA Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience workshop on earthquakes and reconstruction. Maria Gabriella Trovato, EPD-NET WP6 co-leader, was one of the moderators. Drawing on the effects of the 6 February 2023 earthquakes on Antakya, Çabuk discussed the responsibilities of landscape architecture and also presented EPD-NET.

Prof. Dr. Alper Çabuk delivered Eskişehir Technical University’s 2026–2027 academic year opening lecture on 29 September 2026. His lecture, “At the Limits of the Planet: Disasters, the Climate Crisis, COP31 and the Future of Humanity”, addressed the responsibilities of science and universities, the climate crisis, the 6 February earthquakes and societal resilience. Çabuk stressed that universities must ask not only “What can we do?” but also “What should we do?”, and also discussed EPD-NET.

EPD-Net Stakeholder Meeting Brought Together Over 120 Participants to Shape the Future of Ecological Planning

Held on 11 March 2026 at 13:30 Brussels time and 15:30 Türkiye time, the EPD-Net Stakeholder Meeting brought together more than 120 participants from academia, municipalities, and international institutions to reflect on the project’s first-year achievements and discuss the future of ecological planning for disaster-resilient cities. The meeting focused on the lessons learned from the 2023 Türkiye–Syria earthquakes as well as the growing climate-related risks affecting cities across Europe. Discussions highlighted how nature-based solutions, interdisciplinary education, practice-oriented knowledge production, and collaborative learning can transform the way we plan, design, and rebuild our cities. The origins of the EPD-Net project are deeply rooted in the devastating earthquakes that struck Türkiye in February 2023, affecting 11 provinces and causing immense destruction. The severe impact on Antakya (Hatay), the hometown of project coordinator Dr. Alper Çabuk, gave the initiative a strong personal and humanitarian dimension, shaping it not only as an academic project but also as a response to an urgent need for change. At the same time, recent disasters across Europe — including destructive floods in Germany, Belgium, Greece, Bulgaria, and Türkiye, severe storms, and wildfires in Southern Europe — have made it increasingly clear that disasters are not confined to one geography. These events have revealed a shared reality: cities have too often been planned against nature rather than in harmony with it, with devastating consequences for both people and the built environment. EPD-Net emerged from the determination to transform this collective grief into action, focusing on the three major disaster types affecting Europe most: earthquakes, floods, and storms. At the heart of the project lies the recognition that the key challenge is not a lack of ideas in ecological planning, but the persistent gap between theory and implementation. In response, EPD-Net aims to strengthen the practical application of ecological spatial planning and design in the creation of disaster-resilient cities and communities, while also increasing professional capacity and employment opportunities in this field. Rather than addressing only post-disaster destruction, the project promotes preventive approaches that help build sustainable, adaptive, and locally responsive environments before disasters occur. To support this vision, the project is developing EPD Assist, an intelligent training module that integrates digital competencies such as GIS, remote sensing, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality. Designed to move beyond conventional theoretical education, the platform offers multilingual and personalised learning pathways tailored to different participant profiles. In parallel, EPD-Net is creating a comprehensive curriculum for architects, engineers, planners, and designers, covering 14 main themes and more than 180 course topics, built around case studies, studio-based learning, and scenario-driven training. One of the project’s most distinctive features is its adaptation of the ECHO model — originally developed for the healthcare sector — to the field of ecological planning. Through this model, EPD-Net is building a long-term, multi-stakeholder network in which academics, municipalities, civil society organisations, international institutions, and professionals can come together on a shared platform of exchange and learning. In this way, knowledge is not transferred in only one direction, but co-created and continuously expanded through dialogue and collaboration. By bringing diverse actors together, EPD-Net is helping to build a network where everyone teaches and everyone learns — contributing to safer, more resilient, and more nature-compatible urban futures.

As of March 1, 2025, the EPD-Net project has officially begun! EPD-Net is an international initiative that aims to develop innovative solutions in disaster management and sustainable urban planning. Funded under the Erasmus+ Program, the project focuses on ecological planning and design (EPD) approaches to create disaster-resilient and sustainable cities. Project Scope and Objectives The EPD-Net project brings together academia, public institutions, private sector, and NGOs to develop an AI-based adaptive smart training module for disaster management. The project’s key objectives include: ✅ Enhancing the role of ecological planning and design in disaster management ✅ Developing a smart training module integrating green, digital, and resilience skills ✅ Training a qualified workforce for physical planning and disaster management ✅ Strengthening international academic collaboration and knowledge exchange ✅ Encouraging the use of deep tech solutions in disaster management As part of the initiative, an AI-powered Learning Management System (LMS) and smart evaluation systems will be implemented, ensuring that professionals gain expertise in ecological planning and disaster resilience. Launch Events 📅 March 17, 2025 (16:00-17:30, Brussels time) – Launch Meeting 📅 March 18, 2025 (09:00-16:00, Brussels time) – Kick-off Meeting These meetings will serve as a platform to bring project partners together, foster collaboration opportunities, and define strategic goals. Netcad Joins the EPD-Net Project for Disaster Management and Sustainable Urban Development

Turkey's leading spatial digitalization company, Netcad Software, has joined the “Ecological Planning and Design for Disaster Management – EPD-Net” project, an EU-funded initiative aimed at integrating ecological planning and disaster resilience to build sustainable and resilient cities.

Coordinated by Prof. Dr. Alper Çabuk from Eskişehir Technical University, the project brings together 19 partners from 8 different countries and will run for 36 months with a €1.5 million budget.

Strengthening Disaster Preparedness and Response Capacity
EPD-Net aims to raise awareness and build capacity to mitigate the impact of large-scale disasters, such as the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes of 2023. The project focuses on reducing disaster-related losses and enhancing crisis response efficiency through an AI-driven training module and collaborative network.

Netcad’s Key Contributions to EPD-Net
With its expertise in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), 3D visualization, and artificial intelligence, Netcad will play a strategic role in:
✅ Developing AI-based training modules to support disaster management education
✅ Conducting pilot tests for innovative solutions in disaster preparedness
✅ Establishing sustainable business models for long-term impact
✅ Providing GIS-driven simulations and data visualization tools to support real-time disaster response and ecological planning
